The European Commission proposed a new EU budget for 2021-2027

The new EU budget proposed by the European Commission in early May follows a dual objective that might seem contradictory:

  • Lower spending

  • A larger budget

In fact, the Commission wants to limit its costs while also targeting new resources to fund this new budget, in the constrained context of Brexit. Indeed, EU aims at ensuring the continuity of its flagship policies (research and innovation, youth, security) and develop new priorities (digital, defence). It is an ambitious goal, that the Council and the European Parliament will soon examine. This two institutions will have to adopt and vote before the next European elections in May 2019.

“This EU Budget is even more important than previous ones because it will decide on our future at EU 27. It is a budget for a Union that protects, empowers and defends.”

European commission President, Jean-Claude JUNCKER
